Hi! My name is  Dutch Van Der Kuyp. I was born in Suriname, South America 62 years ago. I have cycled all my life. In Suriname, it was my main mode of transportation. I also lived in Holland for a few years, and you know that in Holland everyone rides a bike. Before moving to Florida, I lived in Toronto, Canada for about 10 years, and cycled on and off weather permitting.  After moving to Florida I really got back on my bike, because of the great weather we have here.  I now live in Cape Coral, FL ( Lee County) and I am an 18 year active member of our local bike club, The Caloosa Riders of SW Florida ( I am currently the Vice President ).  In my street I was known as “the bike man”. I fixed all of the neighbors' kids bikes, and got them helmets.  I am also an active volunteer for many events, local and state-wide.  I have volunteered at 15 Suwannee bike events, and 13 Bike Florida rides, to name a few, and I had a lot of fun at all of them. I enjoyed helping all of the rides to be successful, and not to mention all the great people I met on all the rides.   I ride 5 days a week for about 30 miles a day on my Recumbent. I am a 12 year recumbent rider ( no more Pain guys ). TRY IT .  I am also a cross-country cyclist. I have done 3 coast to coast self-contained crossings, on my Recumbent of course ( Southern Tier, Atlantic Coast, and the Northern Tier). I have also won a few gold medals in the Florida Senior time trial Games,(Recumbent classifications). Riding a Recumbent is a great way to promote cycling, because people find the bike so different, and always come and talk to me, so I tell them how great cycling is. In ending I'll say:   Just remember-  cycling keeps you healthy, and it does not pollute.  Happy Trails!  -Dutch

Tom Johnson

Caloosa Riders were saddened by the loss of Tom Johnson on Feb 17th.  Tom was a frequent rider in South Fort Myers and Buckingham.  He introduced many in the club to riding in Florida and often helped out with bike repairs or equipment problems.  His quick wit and endless jokes made him a popular guy in the peleton.  His life ended doing what he loved to do, ride his bike.
